Veterans at work
Help for veterans with disabilities who want to work: VA job training, veteran hiring programs, and help in your state.
VA Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
VR&E, sometimes called Chapter 31, helps veterans with a service-connected disability get ready for, find, and keep a job. It can pay for training, college, job placement, and help starting a business. It can also help veterans who cannot work live as independently as possible.
- You usually need a VA disability rating and a discharge that is not dishonorable. Service members can apply before they leave.
- Apply at VA.gov or call the VA at 1-800-827-1000.
- You can use VR&E and your state's VR agency. They can work together.
Job centers and hiring help
- Veterans get priority of service at American Job Centers.
- Many job centers have veteran specialists who work one on one with veterans who have a service-connected disability or other barriers to work.
- Find a job center near you.
- Some employers and staffing firms focus on hiring veterans. Search veteran-focused job help.
Federal jobs for veterans
- Veterans' preference gives eligible veterans extra points or priority for federal jobs.
- Veterans with a disability rated 30 percent or more can be hired without the usual competition.
- See Federal jobs and Schedule A.
